Dr. Jan Wickenberg, AstraZeneca, SwedenJan Wickenberg started his working life in the 80's as a software engineer, counting as his toughest achievements, firstly, his cracking of DEC's Ada compiler to accept eight-bit character sets, and secondly, his attempts at understanding and maintaining the Fortran code written by his brilliant but dyslectic mentor. In the late 90's, Jan got the opportunity to join the Fenix Executive Doctoral Program, jointly offered by Stockholm School of Economics and Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg. He defended his PhD thesis in 2004, it explaining how management can improve the performance of in-house software projects through exploiting mechanisms that normally would be out of management's reach. Since, Jan has continued his work is to improve the performance of project-based organizations, both in the industry and in the academia.
Why the Software Planning Fallacy Is Never FixedJan's presentation, titled "Why the Software Planning Fallacy Is Never Fixed", intends to give food for thought regarding why so many software projects have delivered late for so many years, and why companies will continue to fail when trying to rectify the problem. Jan's presentation will focus on the difference of interests, and of mindsets, between line management and project management, the consequences, and possible remedies.
